I met Jesus when I was seventeen. A Christian girl I was dating introduced me to the church and some godly young men who helped me to find that Jesus was my great need. A year or so later, I committed my life to full time Christian service.
I met Amy while she was with the Texas Baptist all state youth choir. I was doing summer school and the choir was visiting Hardin Simmons. The phone was out in her dorm so she had come to my dorm lobby to call her boyfriend back home. She never made the call. Three intolerably long years later we were married. That was 1984. Since then, God has blessed us with "a full quiver of boys." Bill came along 21 years ago. Andrew followed eighteen months later. He's now 19. We took a break for five years to catch our breaths before Matthew arrived. He's 14 now. Big as an ox. Micah, the caboose, filled our world three years after Matthew. Micah is 12. Young Bill is studying to be a professor of English at LSU. Andrew is down there with him trying to get ready for med school. Matthew and Micah are both still at the house so we spend an inordinate amount of time at little league ball fields. I'm usually the oldest dad there. They make me sit with the grandparents.
Amy just retired after three years of teaching at Ouachita Christian School. She's back at home and we are thrilled. I'm terrible at doing the housekeeping thing, (Amy banned me from the laundry after I washed a red Liz Claiborne shoe with the rest of the clothes). She's my great friend and love.
My iPod, (actually I don't have an IPod, I borrow Matthew's) has a lot of old 70's music on it. My favorite Christian artists are guys like Keith Green and Rich Mullins. I still like Stephen Curtis Chapman and Casting Crowns are pretty good. To be honest --, and I'm not trying to puff those guys up -- my favorite worship band is the North Monroe worship band. Those guys lift my spirit. My favorite author by far is Chuck Swindoll. I also enjoy reading Lucado, Colson, and Yancey. I'm currently reading, "Faith" by Chuck Colson, and "Signs of Life" by David Jeremiah. I recently finished, "The Dream Manager."
I enjoy all sports. Mostly watching them. I'm a big LSU Tigers fan, "geaux tigers." I also love the outdoors. A friend in the church recently introduced me to beekeeping. So far, no stings. I also do a bit of motorcycle riding. Amy and I are LOST junkies. Other than that we don't watch much television.
I went to Hardin Simmons and then got the masters degree from Southwestern Seminary in Ft. Worth. I had the great privilege of attending Dallas Theological Seminary for a doctorate. I consider the four years of study at DTS to be among the most rewarding experiences of my life.
My life verse is Psalm 37:4. I've seen this one play out in my life and I can honestly say that there is no desire of my heart God has left unfulfilled.
